Which software to program an Android app? Android Studio!
I chose Android Studio even if it’s still in beta because:
- This is a free service provided by Google,
- It is easy to install,
- It is easy to use,
- It is based on another well-known software and therefore has an excellent base,
- The beta is stable,
- There is help everywhere on internet if necessary,
- This software offers support to simplify programming and error research,
- This software is changing quickly and updates are easily installed.
And to test my Android application? Android Studio!
The easier solution is to plug the Android device on your computer with the USB cable provided by the manufacturer, don’t forget to activate the “developer mode” on the device. You must run Android Studio.
With this method we test the application “for real”, without going through the Play Store.
Alternatively, with Android Studio, you can create a virtual machine on the computer. Say otherwise Android will run on your computer, in a new window, and you can launch your application.
The advantage of this solution is to use all possible test configurations without an armada of phone and tablet at home. You can select:
- The version of Android
- The screen resolution
- The amount of memory
This is important: If your application is successful it will be installed on many kind of device. It will be better if you can control that it works well;)
Installing Android Studio
Android Studio is free. You can download it from this page: https://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/studio.html
As prerequisite, Android Studio requires the installation of a JDK (v6 or higher). As a reminder, this is what allows you to program with Java language (JDK = Java Development Kit). It’s free and downloadable from the Oracle website. For example JDK 7 is available on this page: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk7-downloads-1880260.html
As for Android Studio you need to download the appropriate release for your OS (Windows, Linux …).
I will not describe the JDK installation is very simple. You just have to click and follow the installer…
Then start to install Android Studio.
Choose what you want. I prefer “Just for me” 😉
Choose a location for Android Studio. Next !
Classical screen on Windows… Install !
Installation in progress. Be patient…
Tadaaa ! Android Studio is running 🙂
